We’ve all seen billboards of skinny sun-kissed models in sizzling swimwear – but they’re a long way from the lived reality of most women.

So Australian swimsuit brand Curvy Swimwear has chosen plus-sized model April Helene-Horton to be the face and body of the label’s latest campaign.

Helene-Horton will appear on digital billboards in Melbourne, Sydney and other locations nationally as part of Curvy’s ‘Beach Please’ campaign.

It is the first time ever in Australia that a plus-sized model has worn a bikini on a billboard.

During an interview on The Morning Show, the 36-year-old said she was left for words when she first saw one of the billboards.

“I couldn’t talk, because I was absolutely speechless – it was one of the most special moments of my life,” she said.

“When I look at the billboard, I see a hot, confident and happy woman.”

In a statement, she said she hoped the Beach Please campaign helped other women feel more confident in their own skin.

“Beauty comes in all shapes, sizes, abilities, looks.”

“We need to normalise it, to send the message that every body is a good body.”

The mother-of-one also had just one thing to say to people who have an issue with the revealing billboards.

“Criticising someone about their body really says much more about you than it does about them,” she said.
