JCPenney said it is introducing three new women’s swimwear brands, Mynah, Decree and Sonnet Shores, and adding “new selections” from Champion and Puma to support its activewear offerings.

The activewear department will also continue to feature the department store’s in-house Xersion performance brand with moisture-management properties. The retailer also announced an expansion of its home furnishings offerings.

“There is a constant drive to refresh our brands to keep up with the changing needs of our customers,” said Michelle Wlazlo, executive vice president and chief merchant. “Whether it be preparing their home for special celebrations, getting ready for a long-anticipated vacation, or safely reconnecting with family and friends, JCPenney has everything to help our customers stylishly return to their favorite activities this season.” read more

Solid & Striped is the latest brand to enter the activewear games. 

The swimwear and resortwear retailer, which has also dipped its toes into the ready-to-wear and footwear markets, is expanding into performance apparel today with the launch of Solid & Striped Sport. 

“Active as a category was sort of a natural extension for the brand,” Sarah Landman, Solid & Striped’s chief executive officer, told WWD. “We’ve sort of become known as a swimwear brand, but always set out to be a vacation and leisure lifestyle brand. We just want to do it thoughtfully and strategically and not rush through anything.” read more

The world of workout from home has another player. Summersalt, founded as a swimwear brand, released its first activewear collection yesterday. 

  • Summersalt’s spin on spin gear includes a collaboration with footwear brand APL and recyclable materials.
  • The launch was announced to some customers with a waitlist, but the brand declined to share sign-up figures.

The strategy: Co-founders Lori Coulter and Reshma Chattaram Chamberlin told Retail Brew that leaving the lap lane was always Summersalt’s plan: “If anything though, quarantine has expedited the introduction of Summersalt’s activewear line as there has been such a massive, universal shift in dressing behavior,” they said in an email.   read more
